"Apocalypto" (2006) is a great movie about Mayan civilization in the Yucatan just prior to the arrival of Europeans. Even though only Yucatec dialog can be heard during the movie, English subtitles make it very easy to follow. It is a great story, that includes everything from humor, to drama, to action, to love, to hate, to suspense, to violence, and ultimately to a very unexpected ending that bodes of a big change that is about to come.

This is a HIGH CLOUDY RECOMMENDATION !!!

Some of you shun Mel Gibson movies, but this is one you should make an exception for. Not only will you be thouroughly entertained, but by the end of the movie some of you will be able to understand a little of the Yucatec language.

Here is the official trailer of the movie:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f17xU7dC85o

Here is some more video from the movie:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k12-NR3bJV8

p.s. I believe that all animals harmed or killed in this movie actually were... At least it looked like it to me...

"The Emerald Forest" (1985) is a pretty good movie, that I doubt FrankC or even SPOTES have ever seen. I know that this is not one that anyone will give me crap about for not being obscure. Yeah, some might say it's not a good movie. Don't listen to them, watch it for yourself, and I think you will like it. :D

It takes you to modern day Brazil, and is based on a true story.

Here's a link to the trailer:

Oh hell, even I've seen this movie. It's on cable all the time. There's at least one question regarding the movie in BT's database.

Playboy magazine even had a picture from it in the November 1985 issue for their yearly "Sex in Cinema" pictorial and story. That issue is also notable in this crowd for having a Women of Mensa spread.

"The Music Box" (1932) is a hilarious Laurel and Hardy short film. Watch them as they try to deliver a piano up a very long, steep set of stairs from the street. Some of you may be upset by the police brutality, but he didn't lock them up.

Laurel and Hardy have made dozens and dozens of short films and full length feature movies. I think this is one of the best of their short films. Watch it, and if you like it, go out on the Internet and pick up one of many of the Laurel and Hardy CD sets that will have "The Music Box" and many more of their films on it.

Here's a link to the entire 29 minutes of the movie:

http://www.veoh.com/watch/v19938981hEDH ... +Box+(1932)

p.s. Laurel and Hardy films deserve to be watched, because their films were helped pave the way for the great comedy movies we have today.

"Bright Eyes" (1934) is but one of many Shirley Temple movies. She made a bunch of them, but this is one that my ex-wife loved, even though it brought tears to her eyes every time she saw it. I'm posting it, because it brought tears to my eyes also. Go ahead and watch it. It may bring tears to your eyes too.

I actually think it could be considered as obscure these days, because so many other Shirley Temple movies are much more often shown on TV today.

Here's some video from the movie:

Cloudy I have seen "The Emerlad Forest" several times. It is a great movie. I have also seen "Black Robe" and "The Mission" several times. Along the line of Emerald Forest you might like "Green Mansion" or "The Mosquito Coast".

Frank, I've seen "The Mosquito Coast", and it is one of my favorite movies.

I've got a problem with "Green Mansion". Did you mean to say "Green Mansions". I've searched Google through many pages, and I can only find a movie called "Green Mansions". In any event, I will have to check it out.

It is Green Mansions. This movie : Image

I doubt if you can find it anywhere, but you would probably like an old B&W movie starring Douglas Fairbanks Jr. "Green Hell". It scared the hell out of me when I saw it as 10 year old. I do not like poison darts, arrows and head hunters.

Frank, thank you for reminding me of a great movie that I had fogotten. "Colossus: The Forbin Progect" (1970) is one of my favorite movies.

Here is the trailer:

Hell, let's add Gone With the Wind and Titanic to the list as well.

The film is obsure. Who here claims to have seen it. I do not care if you heard about it. I have seen it.
Who here has seen the movie?

This movie aired on Cinemax Friday afternoon further cementing it's lack of obscurity.

Thought about posting this then, but wasn't about to bump the thread after several days of dormancy.

There is an old black and white movie, which was probably made in the 1940's or perhaps the early 1950's, that I saw many years ago. I have no idea what the title of it was, or who was in it. All I can remember is that it was kind of an intrigue film, and a small part of the story. I remember the good guy has a love interest with a woman, to whom he gives a gift of a rather large hat pin in the shape of an arrow, which she treasures. The bad guys hunt the good guy down to where he is hiding in a cave, and out of ammunition. The bad guy tells him that his girlfriend is dead. The good guy refuses to believe it, so the bad guy throws the arrow shaped hat pin into the cave to prove that she is dead, because they both know that she would never part with it. The good guy gets an idea, and fashions some kind of bow and arrow, using the hat pin for the tip of the arrow. As the bad guy moves in for the kill, the good guy gives him a bad surprise, with an arrow through the heart.

Can any of you figure out what movie this was? :?

Thanks.

DANTE, thanks for the compliment, but there are a few problems for me, when it comes to blogs. First of all I have no idea how to create one, and even if I did, I wouldn't be able to maintain it in a responsible manner. It also really bothers me when people insult me, tell me I'm full of crap, and things like that, which if I understand correctly, is not all that uncommon on blogs. Here in the friendly world of the "ScaRatings", I don't have to worry about any of that stuff, because everyone is very nice and respectful, even when they think I'm full of crap.

Hey guys, lets put it to bed. You're both right in your own way. I think it safe to say that the definition of "obscurity" is somewhat subjective. Let's move on, and come up with some more great movies that might be considered obscure by members of the Toulambi tribe in New Guinea. :D

I believe you may be referring to the Fritz Lang film Man Hunt.
If anyone can think of another movie with a weaponized hatpin used to kill a man while emerging from a cave, I will concede...

"Man Hunt" (1941) is absolutely correct, SPOTES...! It stars Walter Pigeon and Joan Bennett. How do you do it? How can you possibly know so much? I am not merely impressed by your knowledge, I am in awe...! Thank you so much for answering a question that I have been unable to find the answer to for about 50 years.

Here is some video of "Man Hunt" (note the arrow hat pin):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeQ6zCYaams

Thanks to SPOTES, I will add "Man Hunt" (1941) to my list of great obscure movies. :D

"The First Great Train Robbery" (1978) staring Sean Connery and Donald Southerland is worth watching. It was written and directed by Michael Crichton. I think most of you will enjoy it. Actually, I think this is a MUST SEE movie.

Here's the movie's trailer:

p.s. It is sometimes referred to as just "The Great Train Robbery".

Two obscure movies that I saw in the late 50's are "When I Grow Up" starring Robert Preston, Harry Morgan, and Bobby Driscoll. The other is "Face of Fire" staring James Whitmore and cast of great character actors. They moved me when I was 10 or 12 years old. I have been seraching for them. but apparently they are lost. Even TCM, AMC, or YouTube doe not have copies. If anyone knows where I can see them or buy a video, let me know.

Frank, I'm sorry, but I don't think I can help you. However, there is hope. SPOTES is here, and if anyone can come to the rescue, it is SPOTES...! Cross your fingers, go through the Rosary a few times, and if the planets are properly aligned, perhaps SPOTES will give you an early Christmas present with the answers that you are looking for.

p.s. It might help, if you sent SPOTES a case of his favorite beer.

I hate to be a party pooper, especially after the kind of production value that's been put into this thread recently :D , but I only know about the particulars of the movies themselves, not necessarily where people are hiding them.
Try one of the inverted auction sites and put out a couple of feelers for them.
You can borrow the money from Cloudy if you need to. He has some extra scratch in a unused envelope earmarked "Spotes' beer money"...

Mention was made some time ago about the Laurel and Hardy movie "The Music Box", well I go right by the stairs that were used in the film on my way to work. They are just north of downtown L A. There is a plaque commemorating the film. An obscure film that I recall was the movie "Unchained" from 1955. It starred a Los Angeles Ram Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch. He is in the NFL Hall of Fame. It was an abomination of a movie but the theme song endures to this day thanks to Al Hibbler and the Righteous Brothers.
