Yea, I'm in an OLD car feeling. Give me an 8-track player, mono speakers, and a V-8 that gets 8 miles to the gallon, and I'm there

YODA, I'm pretty sure that we have already discussed white sidewall tires and crank windows on this thread. I'm not so sure about two-toned cars, but "crushed velvet seats" are definitely a new topic.

What the Hell are "crushed velvet seats"...?

Who remembers those tiny baby turtles that the five-and-dimes used to sell? You took them home in something that looked a lot like as a Chinese restaurant take-out box.

Image

The tiny baby turtles are long gone from the five-and-dime stores today. (Yeah, the five-and-dime stores are gone too.) Turtles live a long time, and I'm hoping that a few of those little critters are still alive, eating their foul smelling turtle food today.

They still exist. We bought two last time we were at Destin (about two years ago). One died, but we mail-ordered a replacement. There is some legality about how old they have to be before you can sell them, but you can still get them in Florida.

Oh, NO...! Two more mouths to feed...

However, if you feed them well, take them to the veterinarian every time they get the sniffles, and walk them around the block to get their daily exercise, they might live long enough to start having their own tiny turtle babies. When that day comes they will provide you with hundreds of them every year, and you should be able to recover your costs and make a profit selling those tiny turtle babies on the Internet.

p.s. I hope you don't have two males or two females. If you do, the only way you will be able to recoup any of your expenses would be to wait for them to die and make buttons out of the shells that they no longer need.

Cloudy, I'm afraid that I am a bit too shy to ask a turtle what gender it is. Most of the time I can tell when a human is male or female, but there are some times that a person (Remember It's Pat?) can be difficult to determine. I don't go up to them and ask "Are you a man or a woman". I just live and let live.

However, my wife isn't so uncomfortable, and determined that the turtles are both males. I don't know how she did it. I don't know how she can determine the gender of a baby kitten or puppy either. She turns them upside down and looks at the bottom of their paws or something. Something about the bottom of their paws must determine if they are a boy or a girl. I don't know how she does it, and I'm to uncomfortable to ask.

BUT, we digress from this thread.

Bought my wife a Keurig a while back. For Cloudy, this is a one-cup coffee maker that uses manufactured "cups" which drop into a container, and with the press of a couple of buttons, produce a precisely brewed cup of coffee, or in some cases tea or hot cocoa. Gone are the days of peculators and tea kettles.

Cloudy, the pic of turtle soup doesn't faze me. First, the kids' turtles are too small to make soup. Second, I'd eat anything that the chef can eat.

Now, BACK TO THE TOPIC

There is a TV show coming up on April 3rd on TV Land called Forever Young.

http://www.tvland.com/shows/forever-young

Summary....it's about young people, perhaps in their 20's, living with older people, perhaps in their 60's, and each trying to understand the differences between the two generations. Examples include computers vs typewriters, and GPS devices vs foldable paper maps. If you want to know what young kids think of us old geezers, and what we old geezers think of young kids, this might be an interesting show to watch. I'm hoping they show a lot of things that we of age try to remember, and kids never saw.

Yoda, who thinks that TV land should be about old skool TV shows. But, this one looks interesting.

"Forever Young" might be interesting, but I don't watch TV. Let me know if it's worth buying the CD's of.

The first time I went to the link you gave us, I had to click on "Video Clips" to see the previews of the shows, which will be starting in April. However, after I went to it again they came up with no problem.

Oh, but you gave me a great "Try to Remember" idea, which is going to be my next post on this thread. Thanks, YODA.

Free gas station road maps... Damn, they are all gone now.

Image

I wish those gas station road maps would come back, because even though I have a Garmin GPS thing-a-ma-jig in the glove compartment of my car, I can't figure out how to work the damn thing.

What are all those youngsters going to do on a long car trip, when their GPS stops working, without knowing how to read a road map, let alone not even having one in their car, and no gas station to pick one up for free...?

There was a time in the 1950's and 1960's, when there were rock and roll instrumentals that were big hits. Yep, no singing, just guitars, drums, saxaphones, etc. Duane Eddy, The Ventures, Booker T and the MG's, Bill Black's Combo, Johnny and the Hurricanes, The Fireballs, Dick Dale & the Del-Tones, Dave "Baby" Cortez, The Champs, Link Wray and His Ray Men, and Bill Doggett were just a few, who put their music on the charts without singing a word. I may be wrong, but I don't think there are many rock and roll instrumentals hitting the charts today.

Here is a sampling of some of those hits:

Daune Eddy "Rebel Rouser" (1958)

The Ventures "Walk Don't Run" (1960)

Booker T & the MG's "Green Onions" (1962)

Bill Black's Combo "Smokie, Part 2" (1960)

Johnny and the Hurricanes "Reveille Rock" (1959)

The Fireballs "Bulldog" (1960)

Dick Dale and the Del-Tones "Misirlou" (1962)

Dave (Baby) Cortez "The Happy Organ" (1959)

The Champs "Tequila" (1958)

You've got to be pretty old to remember the time when there were roller skates that clipped on to your shoes, and needed a key to tighten them. I had a pair back around 1952, and finally figured out how to get them to lock onto my shoes, but I never figured out how to skate on them in any direction other than forward until I fell down or ran into something that stopped me. I have never roller skated since that time, and at my advanced age, will probably never roller skate again.

p.s. Oddly, I actually figured out how to do it many, many, many years later, but too late for me. I taught all of my kids how to roller skate, without ever doing it with any success myself.

However, Melanie did:

I am old enough to remember toilets that had water tanks that were suspended high on the wall above you, where my grandfather, who was the superintendent of the County Home in New Haven, Connecticut, lived back in the 1950's. The one that I remember had a water tank that was considerably higher than the one in the above picture.

Yep, and after pulling the chain, you hoped that the water tank wouldn't be yanked off of the wall.

Even though there may be some steam radiators still around today, there aren't many, and they fall far short of the old ornate steam radiators from the past. My grandparents had them, when I was a kid. The clanking, hissing, ghostly sounds they put out in the night were things that a youngster would listen to, while he/she was going to sleep.

Today very few children will understand Dorothy Aldis's poem "Radiator Lions" poem, but if you're old, I think you will enjoy it.

While we're at it, how about Pan Am...?

I had this toy Pan Am airplane, when I was a kid. I never threw it away, but somebody else must have. I wonder where it might be today.

Last week I saw some telephone poles that still had the metal spike steps for climbing them. They were the first I've seen in a very long time, and were very old. I don't think that telephone companies have been putting any new ones in for quite a while. If I am right, my guess would be that the metal spike steps have been done away with so kids can't climb them, and injure themselves.

Perhaps, but in a way they aren't needed because in today's day-and-age, electric companies have "cherry pickers" that can lift electricians up and down (a their control). I've seen things put on and around poles to prevent kids from climbing them.

On a side note, I saw on the news about a month or two ago that the last telegram was delivered. It was in India. Years ago, before the age of cell phones, messages between two people were some times sent by telegram, and at times by wires attached to poles, similar to what Cloudy showed. Even older than that, these poles sent telegrams by Morse Code. I would like to know someone who can spell the alphabet in Morse Code. Personally I can only do three letters. S is ..., O is --- and V is ...- (that last one is dedicated to WWII history buffs)

I'm sure you are right about the cherry picker trucks. That's a good explanation, and better yet it makes sense.

p.s. When I was an aviator I memorized the Morse Code. You had to do it to identify ADF stations. Sadly, I have forgotten it all. :(
