BTW-- Has anyone mentioned the movie "Let It Ride", with Richard Dreyfus & David Johanssen (aka, Buster Poindexter).

"Let it Ride" (1984) starring Richard Dreyfuss and Teri Garr is a great TIEFLY recommendation. Though I have yet to see the movie, I'm putting it on my ever growing list of ones that I have to see.

Here's the trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRJ3eovuzcc

After watching the trailer, I think that this would be a fun movie to see, and if I can get myself out to Churchill Downs for the Spring Meet, I might be tempted to put a $2.00 bet down a couple of long shots.

TIEFLY, keep your movie recommendations coming. This one was a lot better than the trout fishing movie you posted a long time ago.

"I Led Three Lives" (1953-1956) was an interesting TV series. It was based on the true story of Herbert Philbrick, who infiltrated the Communist Party in the United States. As I understand it, J. Edgar Hoover, and the F.B.I. had to approve every episode, before they could be aired.

There were 117 episodes, and if you can figure out where to find them for sale, I don't think they will cost all that much.

Here's a link to one episode:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXSbatv0f4M

It was a great series, and I recommend it to those, who remember when we were concerned about the communists and the cold war.

p.s. I'm guessing that FrankC remembers this TV series also. :D

"The Ray Bradbury Theater" (1985-1992) was a TV series that ran on HBO and later on the USA Network. There were 65 episodes, all of which were written by Ray Bradbury. I never watched them on TV, but picked up a DVD set that had a bunch of them. They are GREAT...! I wish I had all 65 episodes. If you are a sci-fi buff and haven't seen "The Ray Bradbury Theater", YOU MUST...! You can pick up various DVD packages of them quite inexpensively, and I promise you that you will not be disappointed. They all are very short, and all of them have a a surprising twist at the end.

Here is the begining of one episode (I wonder where it will take you.):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGAIyOrxnKg

Here is the begining of another episode (I wonder what will happen.):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2sv5XWaiQY

These stories go everywhere. Bradbury had a mind and an imagination that had no boundries. Hop on board and these Bradbury tales will take you to places and things that you never dreamt of.

My dad loved "Medic", (1954-1956) and I watched a lot of them with him. However, I was young, and couldn't remember the stories when I got old. So I went out and bought a DVD set of them a couple of years ago. I was surpised to learn that Richard Boone only introduced a lot of the episodes. (There were 59 episodes.)

Great recommendation, Frank.

Here's an entire episode in which Charles Bronson played an important part:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5TVsCdqO8g

p.s. William Beaumont (Played by Ainslie Pryor.) was a real Army doctor, and this is probably a true story.

There was a movie I once saw a long time ago about a Little League age kid, who somehow got a magical power, and got to pitch for his favorite professional baseball team. His unbelievable pitching took his team from the cellar to playing for the pennant. Then someone told him something like, "If you really love the team, you wouldn't want them to win the pennant because of your magical power. You should want them to win it on their own." So the kid didn't pitch in the big game, but I think he pulled some other magical trick that gave the team incredible hitting power, and they won without him on the mound.

I have no idea what the name of the movie was, and my recollection of the story is a little foggy. It was a black & white film probably made in the 1940's or early 1950's. I did some Googling, and the closest movie I could come up with was "The Kid from Left Field". However, after reading the story synopsis and watching a brief video of part of it, I don't think it's the one I'm looking for. (It was somewhat similar though.)

Okay you guys, you've come up with the names just about all of the other movies that I couldn't remember the titles of, and I'm counting on you to come through again. :D

I've never seen a movie with a kid possessing magical powers, but there was a film from the mid-50s called Roogie's Bump that was a precursor to the 1993 film Rookie of the Year.

Thanks for trying Frank, but that's not it. This was a black & white movie made back in the 1940's or early 1950's.

I think SPOTES has just nailed another one. I checked out several commentaries on the movie, and it sure looks like "Roogie's Bump" (1954) is the one I was looking for.

This movie did not show up on any of the many web sites I checked that claimed to have a COMPLETE listing of ALL baseball movies ever made. How the Hell can SPOTES keep coming up with these amazing answers...? When it comes to movies, he is the man...!

Anyway, it's a cute movie, and if you can find it, go ahead and watch it. Brooklyn Dodger greats such as Roy Campanella, Carl Erskine, Billy Loes, and Russ Meyer appear in the movie.

p.s. The commentaries did say that it was a magical bump Roogie got from the ghost of a late, great Brooklyn Dodger that gave him his unbelievable pitching ability.

p.p.s. Sadly, there seems to be no video of any footage from this movie available on the Internet. :(

Glad to help.
This movie was available on VHS back in the day but I doubt it made the transition to DVD, But I could be wrong.
Saw this as an afternoon TV double feature with The Winning Team back when I was around ten years old. My recollection is fuzzy. I remembered the kid and the bump but not the magical aspect. Other than the Dodgers, about the only other thing I can recall is that Hilda Chester was one loud old broad.

Thank you SPOTES, you have once again come up with an answer to a movie's name that I didn't want to go to the grave without knowing, let alone seeing one more time.

p.s. I still think it was a magical bump.

"The Winning Team" (1952) starring Ronald Reagan and Doris Day, was just mentioned by SPOTES, but I think it might be a good one to see, if you like old black & white baseball movies from the 1950's. I'm putting it my my ever growing list of movies I need to get and see.

Here's the trailer:

"The Kid from Left Field" (1953) was only an earlier mention, but after reading several synopses of the movie and watching the trailer, I think it probably needs to be more than just mentioned. It looks like a fun, black & white, baseball movie from the 1950's that old farts, who enjoy this type of movie, might want to watch. It stars Dan Dailey, Anne Bancroft, and Lloyd Bridges

Here's the trailer:

"Tap Roots" (1948) is a FrankC recommendation that I have a few things to add to. It has a star-studded cast, with Van Heflin, Susan Hayward, Julie London, Boris Karloff, and Ward Bond. I've never seen it, but if FrankC says it's good, my "need to see" list has just grown by one. Thanks Frank. :D

Here's about five minutes of film from the movie:

"Thriller" was a TV series (1960-1962) hosted by Boris Karloff. There were 67 episodes, which were all sci-fi or supernatural stories. A number of pretty famous actors and actresses starred on the show, including: Aldo Rey, Elizabeth Montgomery, Leslie Nielsen, Leo G. Carroll, Rip Torn, Cloris Leachman, George Kennedy, Marlo Thomas, Dick York, Mary Tyler Moore, William Shatner, Ursula Andress, Richard Chamberlain, and Boris Karloff (5 episodes).

I never watched the program when it was on TV, but picked up a DVD set that had a few episodes a couple of years ago. The ones I saw were all pretty good, and reminiscent of the "Twilight Zone". The entire series is available in one CD set now, but it ain't cheap.

If you are a sci-fi buff, who has never seen "Thiller", I think you might enjoy it.

Here's the intro from one episode:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNTs5M2uUOY

(This intro is not from one of the best episodes. It was the only one I could find.)

p.s. Full episodes can be viewed on YouTube.

p.p.s. There was a similar British TV series by the same name, that ran from 1973 through 1976. I don't know if it was ever aired in the United States.

"Forever Young" is a YODA recommendation that I brought over here from another thread. His recommendation is a ground breaker in two ways:

1- It's the first TV reality show to be recommended on this thread.

2- It hasn't been aired yet. (The first show won't be seen until April 3, 2013.)

From what I understand, it will put a group of young people together with a group of old farts in a confined environment over spring break, where they have to interact with each other.

YODA seems to think it will be great. I have my reservations. However, seeing that I don't have cable, and haven't watched TV programs since the late 1970's, I guess it will be up to you guys, who do, to determine just how obscure "Forever Young" will be.

Here's a sneak preview:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30aDlmzEfIs

(The question is: Will I be buying a DVD collection of this program four years from now to see what I have missed?)

p.s. When do seventy plus-year-olds take off for spring break...?

p.p.s. In all fairness to YODA, I don't think he expected his post on the "Try to Remember" thread would wind up being mentioned here.

"Strange Brew" (1983) is a great TIEFLY recommendation...! It was a hilarious movie. I wish I would have remembered it before TIEFLY did. If you haven't ever seen it, and like funny movies, this is a MUST to see!

The trailer sucks so here are two snippets from the film:

Zebra, seeing that you liked "Strange Brew" as much as I did, I've got a feeling that you probably have a few more good movies that you liked that nobody has mentioned yet. Go ahead and post them up here. There may be some that I've missed that I need to see.

"Volunteers" (1985) starring Tom Hanks, John Candy, and George Plimpton is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. It's a story about a spoiled rich boy on the run for his life from people he owes gambling debts to, and the wacky bunch of Peace Corps volunteers he winds up with in Thailand. That sounds like a crazy plot, and it is, but it works. I highly recommend this movie to anyone, who likes to kick back with a beer, and doesn't mind spilling some of it while laughing their ass off watching a zany movie.

However, I doubt Sargent Shriver, who was the director of the Peace Corps at the time when the movie was in production, would echo my sentiments. After he read the script, he complained that it "was like spitting on the American flag", and demanded changes. The changes were never made, but by the time the film was released, Shriver was no longer director, and Peace Corps officials were willing to endorse the movie. (Trust me, after five years in the Marines, and a person, who loves America, I don't think this movie spits on the American Flag.)

Here's a link to the movie's trailer:
