"Watch Mr. Wizard" (1951-1965) was an educational TV series featuring Don Herbert. It was a great program that taught kids all sorts of things about science, that probably very few kids know today. You can pick up most of the "Watch Mr. Wizard" programs on DVD today. I highly recommend them to those of you, who have younger kids or grandkids, who would learn a lot from them.

Here is a link to one episode:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo4sqjcGUYo

p.s. If I remember correctly, FrankC knew Don Herbert. I believe they lived close to each other in Chicago, and that little Frank visited him at his house. Thank goodness that Don Herbert didn't show Frank how to make atomic bombs...

I really can't claim to have known him. When we would see him on the street we would say "Hi Mr Wizzard" and he would give an hello back. He lived about two or three blocks north of me. He moved to New York in 1955 when his show was moved there.

Frank, does this mean that you won't be able to get me Don Herbert's autograph...? Dang... :(

This thread seems to be dying, so I will post this: "The Swimmer" Image. Ihave not seen it since the 70's. it fascinates me.

This thread will NEVER die, as long as guys and gals like you and I are around...!

Let's take a look at "The Swimmer" (1968)...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIegoQAayFs

Looks pretty spicy to me. You know, I'm thinking that this might be a thinly disguised cinematic bio of someone, who posts on the "ScaRatings".

p.s. Why is it that those sissy swimmers got all the gals, while real men, who ran track and cross country just got blisters...?

"Something Wicked this Way Comes" (1983) was a pretty good movie, and I recommend it for those of you, who would like to scare your younger children. Better yet, it's a Ray Bradbury story.

Here is the trailer:

(Belated edit: I changed the YouTube link because of problems I had with the first one.)

I love this movie. It scared the hell out of my kids and me and my wife too. Somebody needs to tell Hollywood that there are no mountains in Illinois. I think I have read every book or story that Bradbury wrote. Greenfield Illinois is actually Ray's hometown of Waukegan. The charectors are actually Ray and his best friend and his father was the town librarian.

Hey!
I never heard you complain when Spielberg had police driving off cliffs on "Mount Muncie" in Close Encounters.

SPOTES, maybe you need to send FrankC a PM to wake him up. I'm thinking that FrankC might be busy with other things, and doesn't check the "ScaRatings" as often as you and I do. I'm sure that once Frank reads your post, he will be Johnny on the spot with a reply.

"Earthworm Tractors" (aka "A Natural Born Salesman") (1936) is a great Joe E. Brown comedy. Even though it's old and in black & white, it's a talkie, and I recommend it. It's funny...! I doubt many of you have ever heard of it, let alone ever seen it, but go ahead, waste a couple bucks, and buy it on the Internet anyway. I think you will like it too.

If you don't want to add it to your film library, here's a free link to the entire movie:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqEasqG8ihI

p.s. The world premier of this movie was held in Peoria, Illinois, home of the Caterpillar Tractor Company.

p.p.s. I think it's time for a remake of the movie, with Steve Martin playing the part of Alexander Botts.

I want to thank SPOTES, FrankC, and ICEMAN for coming up with the titles to several films that I couldn't remember. I gave you all what I would consider to be very vague clues as to what they might be, and you guys came up with them. Well, earlier tonight I finally went out and bought "It's Hummertime", "Man Hunt", "Roogie's Bump", and "Sabotage Agent" on Amazon.com. I was surprised that they cost a little bit more than I thought they would, but that's okay, because they are all films I want to see one more time.

p.s. Frank, I also tried to find "Last Commando", that you recommended, but I couldn't find it for sale on Amazon.com.

"Hollywood 360" is a nationally syndicated talk radio show, aired on Saturday nights. The program is hosted by Carl Amari and Sarah Adamson. It focuses on classic radio, movie, and television. I am mentioning it here, because not only does the program present a lot of great movie and TV trivia, it also has a call-in trivia contest, conducted by Lisa Wolf, where you can win prizes such as TV and movie DVD's. As smart as some of you guys are on classic movies and TV shows, I think you might want to try to call in, and see if you can win something.

Image

p.s. Sadly, I cannot find the call-in telephone number. If anyone knows it, please let me know. Thanks.

Cloudy the movie is "The Last Command". It is available from Amazon and TCM. TCM has almost every movie ever made.

Here is the Theme song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSYPSbXJHLE

Theme songs like that are not made anymore, but there are not any Gordon MacRaes either.

Frank, I misspelled the title. With the correct title, I found it on Amazon.com tonight. However, I could only find it on VHS, and as much as I love your recommendations, the price was quite a bit higher than I wanted to cough up for an old movie on VHS. (Prices ranged from $128.00 new to $31.89 used.) If you know where I can pick it up for less than twenty bucks, please let me know.

Thanks,

Cloudy

p.s. I enjoyed listening to the theme song. It kind of made me want to saddle up and ride on down to the Alamo.

SPOTES, thank you too...

"Man Hunt" arrived this afternoon, and I watched it again. It's probably been at least 45 years since the last time I saw the movie. It was better than I remembered, and it brought tears to my eyes. My memory of the film from all those years ago was so foggy, that with the exception of a few things I recalled, it was like watching a movie for the first time.

The DVD came with all sorts of extras, including a lengthy commentary of distinguished movie geeks, who made me realize, that this wasn't just some old movie that Cloudy once saw and liked. It was a GREAT MOVIE that all of you should see...!

p.s. It was directed by Fritz Lang, who fled Nasi Germany in 1933.

And that would be the only reason why I am familiar with the film.
I went through a bit of a German director stretch back in my 20s.
Like all film groupings, mostly forgettable crap with a few gems thrown into the mix. It also raised my weltschmerz percentage to alarming levels...

Thanks again you guys. "It's Hummertime" (A Warner Brothers catroon.), "Roogie's Bump", and "Sabotage Agent" (aka "The Adventures of Tartu") all arrived over the last two days, and I have watched all of them. "It's Hummertime" was just about as I remembered it, but not quite as funny as the first time I saw it, because I knew what was coming next. "Roogie's Bump" was a wee bit of a let down. It was a cute movie, but not a very good movie. However, "Sabotage Agent" was great, and my vague recollections that Tartu used the key trick to get bombs and a gun past the Nasi metal detector, so he could blow up their poison gas factory, were correct.

I will recommend "It's Hummertime" for cartoon junkies. I have a hard time thinking of anyone that I can recommend "Roogie's Bump" to, and I don't think I have to worry about it, because I doubt many of you can still play a VHS movie, and it doesn't look like it's likely that it will show up on DVD any time soon. However, I will recommend "Sabotage Agent" to those of you, who like old black & white World War II films, that gave people hope that perhaps the Nasi's could be defeated. The acting is good, and it has a plot full of suspense with a lot of twists.

I still need help on a movie that I asked about here a long time ago. It's a black & white western, that I am pretty sure probably came out in the 1930's. The only things I can remember about it, are that the two protagonists were being chased by a posse. When the two of them found themselves trapped, with no place to escape, they jumped off a cliff into a river far below, and got away. This movie haunts me, because the jumping off the cliff into the river scene was exactly how Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid also escaped the guys, who were hunting them down, in the 1969 movie.

I'm hoping that someone can figure out what movie this was. I understand that the clues I have given you, aren't very good. However, this is the best I can come up with, and I hope that one of you smart guys can figure out what movie it is.

Gotta see it one more time, before they bring the curtain down.

Frank, "The Last Command" (1955) arrived yesterday. The one I received was a bootleg copy on an unlabeled CD. I haven't watched it yet, but I fear that when I do, the quality of the picture will be something less than what a real CD would have.

"Tales of Wells Fargo" (1957-1962), starring Dale Robertson, was a great western TV series. I believe many of the 200 episodes can be found on DVD's today.

Here is how each episode began:

Here's one whole episode called "The General":
