I looked for "Breaking the Sound Barrier" (1952) on Amazon.com tonight. It was only offered on VHS, and the price for a new one was $156.42. Hell, I don't want it on VHS, and certainly NOT at that price. Does anyone have an idea where I might find it on DVD for a more reasonable price?

Don't bother to get it. It is not that good.

Try this Image.

Be sure to stock up on extra popcorn and low expectations.
Frank is spot on. The Zelazny book is far superior and even it isn't that great. I must admit, I do like giant scorpions, though... :D

Frank, I've already got "Spitfire". (1942) It's a good movie.

Here's the first 10 minutes of the movie (Sadly, it never gets into air combat.):

"Shanghai Knights" (2003) and "Shanghai Noon" (2000) were Mudee recommendations on another thread. I suggested that he bring them over here, but he was concerned that they were not obscure enough, and let it go. I'm not shy, and will post them both here for him, because I think they were good recommendations for this thread.

Here's some video from "Shanghai Knights":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a26E5JR4M4A

Here's some video from "Shanghai Noon":

http://www.youtube.com/movie/shanghai-noon

p.s. Mudee says to watch "Shanghai Noon" first to learn the characters and plot, before watching "Shanghai Knights".

I watched "One, Two, Three" last night, and it was kind of a disappointment. I kept hoping that it would get better, but it didn't, so I turned if off. Perhaps, if I had watched the whole thing, I might have liked it, and maybe I'll give it another chance some day in the future.

Not your typical Jimmy Cagney vehicle. A bit of a Cold War era comedy. It has it's moments but not many.

ICEMAN, I'll probably watch the rest of it anyway. Even though I don't know where the movie is going, I hate not knowing how it ends. :D

I think this movie ranks with "Plan Nine From Outer Space" as the worst movie ever made:

Frank, the image you gave us won't show up on my computer. I tried right clicking on it, and selected "show picture", but nothing happens. What movie is it? It looks like you copied the image from the IMDb web site, which I believe prevents people from moving their images to other web sites.

The picture is there...

Frank, "Robot Monster" came out in 1953. I saw it in Geneva, NY, when I was seven-years-old, and back then it was one of the most terrifying movies I had ever seen. Yeah, by today's standards, after we have grown up and have become more sophisticated, it's easy to make fun of that movie. However, back in 1953, when you were seven-years-old, it was pretty damn good. I still like it, no matter how goofy it seems today.

Here's a link where you can watch the entire movie for free:

Watch it alone with the lights out, and your skin will crawl with fear...!

"Pennies from Heaven" (1981) starring Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters is a movie that I would guess many of you haven't seen. It's kind of a comedy, but I would say that it's more of a drama. (Possibly, one might consider it a musical.) I highly recommend this movie for those, who want to laugh between worrying about the characters, what will happen to them, and crying.

The movie also has some wonderful music from the 1920's and 1930's, as well as some great dancing scenes.

This is a fairly strong Cloudy recommendation despite what the critics, SPOTES, and ICEMAN might say about it. I say go ahead and watch this movie. I think many of you will like it. I did...

As difficult as it has been to find footage of the movie on You Tube, I think it qualifies as being obscure.

Here is some footage from the movie that I was able to find, that doesn't really doesn't do the movie justice:

Here are some kids' shows from the 1950's that are gone:

Image

"The Merry Mailman" (1950-1956) starring Ray Heatherton was pretty good when I was 5 or 6 years old.

I couldn't find any actual video of the show, but I did uncover this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltbDNbmCnGc
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Image

"Rootie Kazootie" (1950-1954) Starring Todd Russell was another one I watched. (It included Polka Dottie, Poison Zoomack, and policeman, Mr. Deetle Doodle too.)

Here is one entire show:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ppe1k3Jv_6U

Here's some more footage with Polka Dottie, Mr. Deetle Doodle, and Poison Zoomack:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZzcyyW76kg

(Poison Zoomack could very well be the first recurring villain on a children's TV show,)
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Image

"Winky Dink and You" (1953-1957) starring Jack Barry was darn good as long as you weren't over eight-years-old. It had a neat thing called the "Magic Drawing Screen", which you placed over your TV screen, that allowed kids to draw things like bridges to get Winky to where he needed to be. (Sadly, my parents never got me the "Magic Drawing Screen".) However, Winky would get there on the TV, even if you didn't have the "Magic Drawing Screen" to help him.

Here's some video of the show:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdjFw31u1Cg

Image

"Ding Dong School" (1952-1956) starring Frances Honwich (Miss Frances) wasn't my type of show, but my younger brother, Bob, watched it. I believe it came out of Chicago, so maybe FrankC might have seen it.

Here's some video from the show:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0FMMSaUUjM

"Kukla, Fran, and Ollie" (1947-1954 NBC & 1954-1957 ABC) starring Fran Allison, was another kids' program from my childhood. It was pretty good in its time, if you were a kid. It also had Buelah Witch on some shows.

Here's some video of the show:

Here's some more video featuring Buelah Witch:

I can thank these kids' TV shows for giving me a reason to go outside and learn how to play baseball.

p.s. I am sure there are more, and if you old guys can think of some, please feel free to add them to this thread.

I never cared for Rootie Kazootie or Winky Dink. I liked K F and O and Ding Dong School. I met miss Frances and Fran Allison once.BY met I mean "I like your show" and they would say thank you. They and other local TV Celebs would attend events all over the Chicagoland area. Other local kids shows I liked were The Uncle Johnny Coons Show, The Two Ton Baker Show with Bubbles the Porpoise, Jobberwokey Place, and Garfield Goose. Garfield Goose is the longest running children's puppet show in TV history. It was on from 1952 to 1976. I watched it when I as 4 until I was 29. It as a late afternoon show.

Frank, was "Kukla, Fran, and Ollie" also a show that came out of Chicago? I have a feeling that the "The Johnny Coons Show", "The Two Ton Baker Show", "Jabberwokey Place", and "Garfield Goose" must have been local Chicago shows that never went nation wide. I've never heard of them before.

WHAS in Louisville had a local kid's show called the "T-Bar-V", with a western theme. Syracuse had its own kids's TV program called "The Magic Toy Shop", with Eddie Flum Num, Mr. Trolley, Play Lady, and Merrily . I believe that there were hundreds of these local kids' TV shows that never went beyond their viewing area.

Heck, as a kid I Liked "Rootie Kazootie", Winky Dink", and "Kukla Fran and Ollie". "The Merry Mailman" was okay. I couldn't stand "Ding Dong School". However, I think these all paled, when compared to the best kids' show ever... "Howdy Doody"! Yep, "Howdy Doody" was even better than "Sesame Street"!

Howdy Doody was the greatest of all Kid's shows. Kukla Fran and Ollie was from Chicago. The other shows were all local. I have no idea if they ever went national.

Frank, I've got a bunch of "Howdy Doody" shows on VHS and DVD, and I've watched quite a few of them. They are kind of hokey by today's standards, but they brought back fond memories from the past. As I look back, one of the disappointments of my life is that I never got to be in the "Peanut Gallery".

My favorite show as a youth was Steve Allen's Meeting of Minds.
That explains a lot, actually...

That was a fantastic show. I loved it. I was not a kid but in my Twenties or older when I saw it. Steve Allen was a genius.

SPOTES, Steve Allen's "Meeting of Minds"...? An old time kid's program...? It ran from 1977 through 1981. I'm guessing that you were so precocious as a kid that you skipped your childhood...

Here's some video of one episode:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNqkzDHkATY

Get a "Howdy Doody" DVD, put into your DVD player, and hit play on your remote. Then lay back in your recliner, down a bottle of Southern Comfort, and watch it. This is one way to find your lost youth, before you have to go to a therapist, who charges $150.00 an hour.

"Wanted: Dead or Alive" (1958-1961) was a great TV Western series, starring Steve McQueen as the bounty hunter Josh Randall. His weapon was a double barreled sawed-off shotgun. He was an honorable bounty hunter, and more often than not, after he had tracked down the person he was after, Josh Randall took their side, and forgot about the bounty they had over their heads.

One of the episodes that I will never forget the end of, was when a woman hired Josh to track somebody down. Josh went through unbelievable danger, fighting, and hardship to accomplish his mission. When he returned, with his mission accomplished, the woman was very thankful, and said. "Thank you. I don't know how I can ever repay you." Josh replied, "A check would do nicely." What a great line...!

I have the complete series on DVD's, but I have yet to find this episode. Until I do, here's one episode of "Wanted: Dead or Alive" that you can watch:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQS0y4Axye0

(Steve McQueen could ride a horse.)

(Belated edit: I have found that I have posted "Wanted Dead or Alive" before on this thread, but I'll leave it here anyway.)

(Steve McQueen could ride a horse.)

Cloudy, Josh Randall carried a sawed off Winchester. Johnny Yuma The Rebel carried a sawed off shot gun.
