My good friend and BT traveling buddy, Thomas Flegal/FLEGAL, passed away from pancreatic cancer yesterday.

The first time I played in Winchester, Tommy invited me to sit at a table and introduced me to the other players there. I found out that this was due to the fact that I had beaten the local blowhard (The Legendary MCGREW) and the group wanted to buy me a beer. I asked Tommy if he played FLEGAL as an homage to the Banana Splits & started to sing the theme song. I got funny look before he told me that it was his last name.

Over the years, Tommy & I would hit various trivia spots on semi-fishing adventures: Peanuts & Merks in Florida, Jolly Roger & Black Pelican at the OBX, the now defunct Colonial in PA. Usually, we managed to ruffle the locals' feathers one way or another. He was always up for a few BT games when I came into town. The last time we really got to play was last October when he stayed out for the music game when the headliner turned out to be Punk Rock & the BWW Winchester finished in the top 10 (and one of them damn "FLY"s was up there as a player).

A gifted guitarist and songwriter, Tommy knew the music questions...to what HE considered music. The rest was just crap put on the radio between commercials. Of course, that didn't mean he would share the answer in a timely fashion, especially when a Wipeout game was at stake. Usually he would just start cackling...loudly if it was question 15 and he thought he was going to win.

I was hoping to see him, since I am heading over to 'chester in two weeks. Sadly, ain't gonna happen.

So Rest In Peace, Sir Thomas Deuteronimous Leviticus Flegal...may thou pitch woo to the young raven haired lasses in the great BT sites beyond.

This sucks!

Looks like you sent the local blowhard into hiding since he has no trivia play in a long time. Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend.

Actually, MCGREW was/is a legend in Winchester BT lore and he & FLEGAL had a bizarre friendship. MCGREW has since moved away, but the his stories/fables, and FLEGAL's reactions/responses to them, make the locals in 'chester still laugh.

I just spoke to Tommy's widow and service details are still being worked out. But I plan on having a trivia wake at the BWW Winchester in Tommy's honor...maybe this weekend. Hope to see the VA players there.

Sorry to hear that your buddy passed away, TIE. It has been many years, and beers, since I played in Winchester and I can't say for certain if I met him or not.

Per your FB message (can't get on it @ work, but can see messages): Flegal wasn't the best trivia player, but he was fun for me to hang out with...mutual interests & humor. Tommy was the first person to take me to Pargos to play, which became my homesite until it shut down.

I haven't heard about arrangements yet, so I can't say for sure about a trivia wake. It may have to be at a later date, since I would like to make sure a few folks like JETS, SPIEGS, BC, Dewey & GRYFOX can make it.

Been a rough day.

Truly sorry to hear of this. FLEGAL sounded like good people. I lost my Dad to pancreatic cancer... I hate it!

And on a good note: I was just playing a CD game, getting calls & texts about Tommy.

When the rankings showed, I was #1, with a former Winchester player (and MCGREW crony) at #2.

Feels like Fleg's buying me a beer all over again.

Cheers, my brudda!

Most of the gang is out of town this weekend, but I'm heading over anyway. There is a small memorial service Sunday.

Hope to see Erin & Katie & Jeff and some of the folks at BWW. Keep taking care of the west coast for us easterners.
