Sounds fine by me. Dates are pretty much the same as before.

Bring on The 2024 Mudee Thur Six Challenge #11.

That's a big problem for those who observe Jewish holidays. October 3, 17 and 24 are no-gos for
them.

Some additional detail:

2024

Rosh Hashanah - October 3-4
Yom Kippur - October 12
Sukkot - October 17-23
Shemini Atzeret - October 24

Since the dates for these holidays are calculated by a lunar rather than solar calendar (like Easter). they can vary considerably from year to year. Here are
the dates for 2023:

2023

Rosh Hashanah - September 16-17, 2023
Yom Kippur - September 25
Sukkot - September 30-October 6
Shemini Atzeret October 7

Ed, what dates did you have in mind that would work for the most number of people? Maybe all of Sept ending Oct 3 using a drop score when needed. Or Oct 24 through Nov. 21 ending before Thanksgiving. Or 2 or 3 games in Sept and the rest in Nov. Halloween could be bad for some people.

NY definitely needs a say as probably the top contender to Walsh’s. Arch II and Johnny Malloys should have something to say too.

I am quite aware of all the Jewish holidays and in past years have been the only one that I am aware of who has spoken up for the avodance of Rosh Hashonnah and Yom Kippur in the fall. Postponing the tournament because of the ay of Rosh Hashonnah, the first night of Sukkot and Shimini Atzeret would be something only the most devout Orthodox observe. Do you or anyone on your team do so?

I do not but two of our players do. One in particular does not play for this reason throughout the year, and yes, he is Orthodox. When I see these notices, I automatically ask him. We grin and bear it if it's only one date affected, but this is three.

September dates would be OK enough.

To illustrate the earlier emails, here is the text of an email sent yesterday:

Hi. FYI. Monday night until Tuesday night is a religious holiday, Tisha B'Ab. So, I will be unavailable to play Tuesday. I should be present Wednesday and Thursday as usual though.

To all teams considering playing in the 2024 Mudee Thur SIX Challenge:

Which of these 2 schedules do you prefer?
1. Sept 26 to Oct 24, 5 weeks with 1 drop score. This would include Rosh Hashanah on Oct 3rd.

2. Sept 26 to Oct 31, skipping Oct 3rd but playing on Halloween. 5 weeks with 1 drop score.

Starting earlier in Sept doesn’t work and we don’t want to get into Nov either.

Thanks for any input on which is better for your team.

Several, I believe 4, people traveling in Sept on the defending champions team and 2 on my team of 3 people as well. At least 2 teams with conflict is enough to avoid early Sept. There could be more. We can probably avoid Rosh Hashanah for your team if you like.

Any other teams who may play the Mudee Thur SIX Challenge have any thing to input on the dates? CT, OH, AR, IL?

Zack’s in Little Rock AR is of interest. Last week they saw themselves in 1st but ended up 3rd after the 2 big Streaming bars were included in the rankings on Fri.

It’s been a while since I have posted here.

Arch II (Rocky Hill, CT) will participate in this year’s challenge. As for the scheduling, I sent an email to our team to get a consensus. If we have a preference, I’ll comment either here or on BadBart.

Well, if travel is a valid reason for avoiding scheduling, we'll have a minimum three people missing for religious holidays/travel on October 24th. That's about half our normal group.

Ed, I don’t think there’s any way to take 2 breaks in the schedule. I believe most teams would rather see us go 5 straight weeks. Taking 1 week off mid tournament will be enough. You can probably have the 3rd or the 24th off. Also it’s still only 1 bar asking for these dates off. 2 bars have trouble with Sept prior to the 26th.

We’ll see what other teams have to say, if anything at all.

November is too late. We’ve usually been done before Halloween. This has been a late Sept through Oct tourney. That’s when people expect it. People make plans accordingly.

There’s election stuff early in Nov, someone might need to be at an Insurrection. Or protesting one. :?
Then starting the week before Thanksgiving people are traveling again.
Nov is not good.

The time frame is Sept 26 to Oct 31. So that’s 6 weeks. We can skip the 3rd or the 24th and teams can use a drop score on the other if needed. Other will take the drop on Halloween probably more interest in skipping that day than the 3rd or 24th.

One last call from all teams for input on which day to skip, the 3rd, 24th or 31st.

As one with no skin in the game, why not play 6 count 4? Yes, there’s the possibility of an easy game on a holiday or similar, but a bad circumstance is always looming in some form with these tournaments.

Or, count a minimum of 4 games, have one drop and go by average score.

Best 4 of 6 is something to consider.

It is very difficult to imagine insurrections or counterinsurgencies two days after election day, before votes have been all counted, much less results certified. That's why January 6 didn't happen on November 6 last time. In any case, there is minimal doubt what the results in Illinois, Maryland, Connecticut and New York will be.

Thanksgiving Day is November 28. Giving people a week for holiday travel is more than generous, but two weeks? Since it was considered kosher to ask me who on my team observed certain Jewish holidays, I ask you: who needs two weeks to get to wherever, and where in the universe is wherever?

As per best 4 of 6, this would be acceptable under one condition: that the tournament play one week prior to September 26. If we are expected to use a drop week when we are half-staffed, then so should Walsh's and Stained Glass. It can't be "we can't play" if certain teams can't make it, and "use a drop week" if other teams can't make it.

Wow!! How about we don't have a tournament and just play for Shits?? (Or Schlitz?)

Something else odd about this. We are told that besides Walsh's. "2 on my team of 3 [are travelling] as well" and 2 teams is enough to change scheduling. Yet if you check https://ntn.donrdenton.com/ntn06.php?GAME=sixthursday&YEAR=2024&ID=1671 and https://players.buzztime.com/site/1671/gamehistory/gameid/132 , you'll see that attendance for both Wednesday and Thursday Six at Stained Glass is . . . nominal. In the last six months, more than two boxes were played in a game of Six . . . once. Even two box nights are rare. Usually, it's just someone named FREEZR playing by himself. If you look at the records over the years, you find that anything resembling a team score is usually only for tournament weeks, and even then, they don't necessarily show up for that.

Whatever you might say of our performance, we currently at Bull's Eye do show up to play. The equipment is more likely to go AWOL than us. The same is true of Walsh's. All we ask is that we get treated the same way as Walsh's gets treated when [rare] circumstances leave us bereft of players.

You are right Stained Glass Pub no longer plays except for this annual Mudee Tournament and we certainly won't be in contention for anything this year either. All our usual players are gone. I will be lucky to get 3 people to play 5 boxes on the minimum 4 weeks and we will be playing just to stay out of last place.

The 2024 Mudee Six Challenge will be a best 4 out of 6 games from Sept 26 to Oct 31st. 2 drop scores. Thats the best I can do for you Ed. Play all 6 and see what happens. You should have 4 good weeks in there.

We are adding Oct 31 to give NY an extra drop score earlier in Oct. because of the multiple Jewish holidays.

As for Stained Glass our BT system has been dead since July 14th and no sign of the owner doing anything and I've spoken with him. So at this rate we may not even play at all.

Good luck to any teams that play.
