Announcing the 2024 Sandbagger Showdown Tournament, Starting Sep 24, 2024. As in previous years, the rules are as below, written in the droll prose of the Amazing Anon.

OFFICIAL RULES:

From its inception, this Showdown tournament has been by, of, and for those teams dedicated to wetware play. Thus, the main qualification for entering this tournament is that teams must be those that have committed themselves to use assembled brainpower only as a general rule. This means no computers and no references of any kind during gameplay, either paper or electronic (or telecommunication from outside the location). This also means no using of electronic devices such as iPhones, iPads, Android, etc., devices to look up or receive answers from elsewhere. Just to be clear, if a team engages in these activities or any form of cheating, it is a disqualifying offense.

All teams that abide by this primary rule are welcome to play, either by signing up on ScaRatings, BadBart, Friends Who Like Buzztime, or otherwise contacting me via PM. All teams must register no later than NOON ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, the day the tournament starts. We reserve the right to personally invite additional qualified teams after the deadline to round out the field and/or include teams that have previously played in the tournament.

There will be two phases to the tournament. First, a four-game qualifying phase will start on Septemebr 24 in which the total points for each team will be tracked. Each team will be able to drop one low score for the final cumulative total after the Octyober 15 game.

The second phase will begin on October 22. It will be a standard bracketed elimination phase. The number of teams in the knockout round will depend on how many teams sign up, there are likely to have a maximum of 8 teams in the playoff round. If only 12 sign up, we may have a 6-team knockout round with a bye for the top two). Seedings for the brackets will be determined by the cumulative score described above, and will remain in place for the rest of the tournament.

The winning team will receive not just the glory of being the brainiest bunch out there, but also the custody for one year of the beautiful Sandbag Trophy, the right to have a plaque with its team name and date inscribed on it placed on the base, and the solemn responsibility of running the 16th annual tournament next fall, and so continue its noble purpose to make the winter of trivial discontent into glorious summer unto the next generation.

Caveats:

Should Buzztime have a system-wide repeat game during the tournament, that week’s scores will be ignored and I will post rescheduled rounds. We reserve the right to cancel the results of a week and reschedule the remainder of the tournament if a significant percentage or more of teams suffer from outages, as has happened in the past. Teams faced with a sudden close or loss of Buzztime at their home location may play at another location as long as they notify me in advance of the game and continue to follow contest rules in the new location. In general, we take no responsibility for and offer no solution nor redress for localized problems (i.e. power outages, lack of players due to illness or vacation, etc.) with one possible exception: If a team in the semi-finals or finals suffers a documentable and unavoidable mid-game crash, its victorious opponent may invite that team to a rematch, but is under no obligation to do so. If the tournament continues through Tuesday Novemebr 5 (US Election Day) the week will be skipped unless all teams still in the tournamentagree to play that night.

Please indicate your team's desire to play in the responses.

Alas, The Fellowship is at a streaming site so will probably have to sit a Sandbag Tournament out for the first time.

However, in the miraculous event that Buzztime somehow gets Showdown on the app on or before October 1, we would be happy to join, taking Sept. 24 as our dropped score, if necessary.

Out of curiosity, how many teams are playing? The response here has been minimal.

As of now, seven teams are in, plus Fellowship if they can access the game (looks doubtful). Official list tomorrow (Tuesday).

As tournament director, I cannot find the entry of Phat Turtle, which I previously had on my list. Can Phat Turtle confirm whether they are in The Sandbagger or not? Thanks.

Lineup for the Sandbagger:

Teasers
Big Guys
Phat Turtle
Time Out West
Wallaby’s
Danny K’s
Lost in Taste
Primetime
Plus the Fellowship if by some miracle The Basement gets the game in time.

The tournament will be best three of four weeks score to determine overall rankings. At the end of that period, that top four teams will be seeded into two weeks of match play to determine the champion.

All teams please remember that if you switch locations for any reason, you must put notification here or on Facebook by game time.

Good luck to all teams.

Of course anything can happen after only one week, but congratulations to former champion Danny K’s for taking the early lead on a tough night in the Sandbagger. Special congratulations to defending champion Teasers for breaking from the gate in last place.

Thanks to Don Denton and his excellent website for the score keeping.

Congrats again to Danny K’s who have stretched out their lead after two weeks of the Sandbagger. No score has been reported yet for Time Out West in either or Glory Daze. Any ideas what happened?

Details can be found on Don Denton’s website.

A network design company made a modification to the internal network at Time Out on Monday, September 30. Unfortunately, this modification rendered the ntn system inoperable. When our team arrived on Tuesday, we found that the games were not showing up on the tablets, and we couldn't log in on our phones. We ended up playing at The Chicago Loop.

The situation should be remedied, and we will be back at Time Out next Tuesday.

Sorry that happened. I regret that due to banned players there (JOHNB, DABEAR) Chicago Loop is not eligible In Showdown. If you need to in the future, let us know here that you will be at The Loop on Tuesdays and exclude those players. As they apparently did not play in Glory Daze, that score can be posted for Time Out in the Gonzales.

After three weeks of the 15th Sandbagger, the total scores and the best two of three scores line up with the same locations making the Final Four: Danny K’s first, Wallaby’s second, Big Guys third and defending champion Teasers in fourth. It looks good for the top three teams but Teaser can be overtaken by good nights by any of the other four entrants with a good performance in the Oct 15 match.

For the Oct. 15 game and at the end of the four week play-in period:

Congratulations to Danny K's for a strong second place last night and a dominant first place overall. Also congrats to Wallaby's in second for the four weeks by a comfortable margin and Big Guys losing some of their margin but still cruising to third overall. Defending champion Teasers, with thier backs against the wall in fourth but with two weeks under 40K, delivered a win with a very good 57774 last night, but it was not enough to hold off Time Out West, who scored a 52438 to overtake Teasers by 764 points. Time Out made the playoffs despite no net, placing a zero on Oct. 1. Besides Teasers, great thanks to Lost in Taste, Phat Turtle and Prinetime for playing. Now, on to the Final Four:

1 seed: Danny K's, Orange, CA
vs. 4 seed: Time Out West, Hanover Park, IL

2 seed: Wallaby's, Lenexa, KS
3 seed: Big Guys, Winnipeg, MN

It is match play of course, with the two winners meeting for first place the next week and the other two (no losers at this level) playing for third. Any questions, please contact The Commissioner. Good fortune to all teams.

For last night's Sandbagger semi-finals, here are the results:

1 seed Danny K's, Orange, CA 44418
4 seed Time Out West, Hanover Park, IL 44286

2 seed Wallaby's, Lenexa, KS 20430
3 seed Big Guys, Wiinipeg, MN 47296

A very close match between Danny K's and Time Out (132 points!) goes Danny K's way and the former champion moves to the finals. In the other match it appears that Wallaby's had trouble with the final question and Big Guys moves forward. Congratulations to all teams for reaching the Final Four.

So, next week, for the finals, a Canada vs US match, Danny K's vs. Big Guys
And for the bronze, Wallaby's vs. Time Out West

Please contact The Commissioner for all point spreads, over/unders and prop bets for the finals.

Congrats to Danny K's and Big Guys for their well-deserved spots in the finals--Good skill to both in the championship game!

Congrats, too, to Wallaby's and Time Out for their semi-final appearance, and to Time Out in particular for its oh-so-close near upset of the folks at Danny K's!

And the results of the 15th Sandbagger:

Congratulations to former and now once again champion Danny K's of Orange, CA! Danny beat Big Guys of Winnipeg 56529 to 53299. In a match with overall higher scores, Danny K's and Big Guys were 1-2 in Wetware (non-cheating) locations. Kudos to both teams again.

In the third place game Time Out West, Hanover Park, IL defeated Wallaby's 50016 to 46845. Well done to both teams there.

In a side note, Big Guys and Time Out (Teasers as well) all noted playing with few people and/or few devices. Three cheers for the hardcore, but here's hoping that by the next tournament, all locations will be on the same footing and be familiar with playing on phones, I-Pads, etc., that Showdown will be available to all locations and that we all will find new players to join us crusty veterans.

Thanks to Don Denton and his website as always for being official scorer.

Danny K's and Big Guys please private message me with the addresses to send trophies and medals.

And with that, Teasers ends its Sandbagger reign and looks dewy eyed and hopefully to a bright, glorious quizzing future for us all.
