Crystal Castles -- great game!!

Cloudy, it was a game where you would control "Bentley Bear" with the trackball, moving him around a platform with gems scattered on it. You (Bentley) would try to get all the gems possible, and if possible, the last gem.

There were bad things too, that would kill you if you touched them. "Gem-eaters" would eat up the games they reached, but you could eliminate them by moving over them exactly when they were eating a gem. Other things that would pursue you would be "black balls" (I'm sure there was a better word!) and trees. At the last stage of each level was a witch that if you moved over it while wearing a magic hat, you would score 3000 points.

There were 10 levels to the game, and four boards per level, except only one board "The End" on level 10. (After completing level 10, the game ended.) The higher the level, the faster everything moved, and this seemed to be the main way that the game got harder.

There were three and sometimes four places where you could warp to a higher level. (The fourth was on the very first board of the game, and appeared as easily accessible door when someone had recently played the game; using it would enable you to warp to the level you ended on in the last game, but no higher than level 8.) The three other levels never changed; one went from 1.1 to 3.1, the second from 3.1 to 5.1, and the third from 5.3 to 7.1.

If you knew where the warps were and had a basic knowledge of the game, you could score in the 400Ks pretty easily; scores of around 600K could be achieved by decent players. My personal best is 758K, and the world record is around 902K (if I recall correctly.)

"Crystal Castles" sounds pretty good to me. I'm guessing it was an arcade game. Never played it, and now I guess it's too late, that is unless there is a PC version of it, or if YODA can somehow "emulatormodulategizmothingabob" the game to run on Windows 7.

p.s. YODA, add "Crystal Castles" to the list. :D[/quote]

Great synopsis of the game. Yes, crystal castles was an arcade game made by Atari and used a trackball similar to Marble Madness. What was cool about the game's trackball though is that it lit up and sometimes would flash when the game wasn't being played. It was basically a 3-d pac man. Really not sure what those black balls were but were definitely a pain in the ass as they would follow you everywhere, just like the trees. There was also a magic hat you could get which would render you temporarily invulnerable and the only thing that would kill the witch. I think you got like 3 or 5 thousand points for this as well. I have the game for my mame emulator but very hard to play with a keyboard.

Cheers,
--Tony

Huh? These are two totally different threads. Why should they compete against each other, especially given many of us (including Cloudy) post on both threads? The number of posts per thread is truly something I couldn't care less about.

"Star War's Battlefront II" looks like it might be a good game. How does gameplay go? Do you know if you can get a version of it that will play on Windows 7?

p.s. I'm pretty sure that there is a "Star Wars Battlefront I" and a "Star Wars Battlefront III". Were there any more?

Gamers want to WIN...!!! We ALWAYS do...!!! We all want to be "Number One!" at everything. We are competitors. We are warriors. That's why we play the games.

Image

................................. "We're Number One...!"

Yeah, they are different threads, and there is no serious competition here, but "Computer Games New and Old" wants to be "Number One...!"   Go gamers...!!!

p.s. You've got to know that this is just CLOUDY joking again. :D

What was the first coin operated computer game in bars...?

The answer is buried somewhere deep in the 20 pages of posts on this thread, but don't cheat by scrolling back, or Googling the answer. Be brave and just post the answer that you think is correct.

Whoever gets this trivia question right first, I will give you four quarters to play the game, if you can find it anywhere to play in a bar, next time I see you. :P

Good luck... :D

Image.....Image ..... Image ..... Image

Put your thinking caps on. These could be YOURS !!!

p.s. Scrolling back to find the answer would be cruel and unusual self-inflicted torture. If you're gonna cheat, Googling the answer will much less painful. :P

Just started a new hidden object game, "Midnight Mysteries: Devil on the Mississippi". So far it looks like a good one. Haven't gotten very far into it yet, but from what I have seen so far, it's looking like it might be another CL0UDY recommendation, ESPECIALLY FOR BRANDYB...!!!

Image

............................. This is where you begin. Give it a try, and let me know how you do. :D

Here's a link to a brief 3 minute video of what you are getting yourself into:

I think we do like the same types of games Cloudy. This weekend I played a Wii for the first time and enjoyed it. The Wii also allowed you to play older games likes those on the NES and Super NES. Ramon can fill you in on some of the others.

I don't get this "Wii" stuff. All I know is that "Wii" costs a bunch of bucks, and it mimics a person's physical moves on the screen, while they pretend to be playing tennis, or golf, and stuff like that. I'm guessing that there is more to it than that, but I need someone to fill me in on what I'm missing.

Image

I think the games go something like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0fuPzbBpNQ

p.s. I wonder how many living room table lamps get destroyed, while people play Wii "Grand Slam Tennis"...?

Image

p.p.s. Why not just go out and actually play real tennis, golf, or what have you...? ;) You'll get more exercise, and your living room lamps will be safe.

Brandy and I had fun playing the Wii. We were careful not to break anything. You can download old Sega games and even Turbo Graphic 16 games.

Sounds good. Can you get all of the Sega games? In particular I would be interested in the Sega game "Zombies Ate My Neighbors". (1993) (Not Joking.)

Image ..........Image ..........Image

Here's a link to some video of the game. The game starts out pretty easy, but gets harder and becomes more fun as you progress to higher levels. It's a damn good game, and I highly recommend it. (I believe that the game has 48 levels. I think I have beaten the game 3 or 4 times, but it ain't easy. Give it a try. )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ut9oWWI0mWM

p.s. While you and Brandy are watching out for the table lamps, look out for the china cabinet too.

.......... Image ............... Image

.......... Oops, there it goes... ........................ Oh, No...! That was grandma's china...

Time has run out... I don't think any of you were really trying... Sorry, no one wins...

According to Wikipedia, the answer is:

"In 1971, students at Stanford University set up the Galaxy Game, a coin-operated version of the Spacewar computer game. This is the earliest known instance of a coin-operated video game." (I agree.)

Image ............... Image

Sorry, guys and gals, it looks like I will be keeping these:

Image.....Image ..... Image ..... Image

Here's a link to where you can actually play the game on line, and it's FREE! (There may be better links.)

http://spacewar.oversigma.com/

What I think I've figured out is on the keyboard to change direction hit "S", to add power hit "D", to fire hit "F". (Interestingly, Louisville's airport code is "SDF".) There may be more buttons to hit to do stuff, but that's all I could figure out tonight. Avoid the central death star that will suck you in to your death. You're flying the fat spaceship, and the bad guys are flying the skinny spaceship. Give it a try and see if you can blow up the bad guys, before the death star sucks you in. Good luck.

p.s. The original "Spacewar" game was created in either 1961 or 1962, but it wasn't coin operated in bars.

p.p.s. I blew up the skinny, bad guy spaceship twice tonight, before the death star's gravity pulled me in to die.

Here's a little video of how game play goes.

http://www.gameanyone.com/video/257233

"Midnight Mysteries, Salem Witch Trials" arrived today... I loaded it with no problem, and it plays perfectly on Windows 7. I played it for a little while to see how it goes, and it sure looks like another great game. I'm going to have to put it on the back burner for a while though, because I'm still working my way through "Midnight Mysteries, Devil on the Mississippi".

Thank you BrandyB for tipping me off to this game.

p.s. For those of you, who might have played some of the boring, stupid hidden object games, I can promise you that this game will not bore you, and it ain't stupid. The hidden object screens are incidental to game play. Both "Devil on the Mississippi" and "Salem Witch Trials" are challenging problem and puzzle solving games, that will test your ability to figure things out. I'm surpised that as smart as most of you guys and gals, who post here are, that more or you haven't given these these games or ones like them a try.

I agree Cloudy. Almost all of the hidden object games I recommend will really only be a small portion of the game, with the puzzles and figuring out what to do and where to go next as the main part. Glad you're enjoying it.

Did you ever get to try Enlightenus? It puts a whole new spin on the hidden object game. I'd recommend trying the first one and not the second.

I finally finished "Midnight Mysteries, Devil on the Mississippi" tonight. It was a great game. I didn't find all of the four leaf clovers, nor all of the hidden ravens, but I did pretty well. I am ashamed to admit that I had to skip more than a few of the puzzles that I had no idea how to figure out, but I also solved a bunch of them. I am also ashamed to admit that I used the hint button more than once or twice. (Usually when I had no idea where to go to find something I needed to progress.) However, I finished the game, as well as the bonus round, with 8 hints left over that I never had to use.

This is really a good game. Does anybody besides BrandyB and I dare to play it. If not, why...?

Image

Come on guys, someone has to be brave enough to confront Mark Twain's ghost, and a few more... Give it a try and let us know how you did, and what you think.

p.s. Brandy, it looks like I am on to "Midnight Mysteries, Salem Witch Trials" tomorrow. You are a bad influence on me.

BRANDY, I probably shouldn't says this, but I will. I don't think many, who post here are still playing computer games. I would guess that their lives with kids, jobs, mortgages, etc., now make it difficult for them to find time to play the new games. The title of this thread is "Computer Games New and Old", and the preponderance of posts to this thread have been about old computer games, which I also love. I like to hear people talk about computer games from the past, but I am hoping that we can somehow get them back into computer gaming again. I think they are watching what we tell them about, and when the time comes, when they can find the time to play the games again, I think we will hear from them about new stuff.

p.s. To you guys, who have kids, jobs, mortgages, etc., who cannot possibly post about the new games, keep you posts about the old games coming. I love those games too. :D

Thanks Brandy, I'll need to check this out. Lefty's Bar dropped NTN trivia last week, so I guess I'll have time to get back to playing computer games again. :P

(I don't think I've alread posted this game, but if I have, please forgive me. It's great...!)

Image

"Deadtime Stories" (2010) is another wonderful game. Yeah, it's a hidden object game, but once again, the hidden object scenes are few and far between, and only enter into game play, because one of the items you will find will be needed to solve problems down the road. The puzzles are challenging, and the game will test your ability to figure things out. The story isn't all that bad either. It's a good game, and one that if BrandyB hasn't already played it, she should.

Here's a link to some game play:

p.s. Rumor has it that there could very well be a sequel coming out, if so, I'm gonna get it...!

"Martian Gothic: Unification" CHALLENGE...!

Image

This is a great game that I have already talked about at length. However, as I have already said, you must download a patch, after installing it, to be able to play the game to the end.

Here is the best patch I can come up with. It is "patch 3.0", and here's a link to it:

You will never make it through the air ducts to this room, or some other places without the patch.

Here's the deal, for first three registered "ScaRatings" people as of today's date, who play this game, and beat it within the next two months, I will reimburse them for the cost of the game, as long as it isn't more than $15.00. I don't care if you resort to walkthroughs. They'll get you to the right places, but they won't get you through them. That will be up to you, and I think you will find that it ain't easy. Don't try to fake beating the game, because you will have to pass a test. I will have a few guestions for you, that you will only know the answers to if you really played and beat the game. :D

p.s. I've beaten the game three times, and I'm old and slow, so maybe some of you youngsters might be able to beat it also.

(To the best of my knowledge the game won't play on Windows 7, but it does on earlier versions of Windows. The game is entirely played on the keyboard.)
