STRO, you mention golf handicapping upthread and here’s some info on that which might give you ideas going forward.

An individual’s golf handicap is a measure of potential and not current ability. The handicap is figured by taking the best 8 of a golfer’s last 20 scores. So if a scratch handicap shoots an 80, that score is a throw out and won’t affect handicap.

I did not know that, thanks. There's something like that in the current rules making adjustments or drops in low scores. Handicapping for Buzztime, where varying team size and abilities are a given, is a given; there are games where it does not seem suitable given the current environment for that particular game.

As for the experimental tourney I was saying a handicapped opening round to set the seeding then head to head rounds without the the handicap.

What I would be more inclined to do is take six months' or a year's worth of playing data and use that to seed a competition, then have playoffs, which would be non-handicapped.

But it doesn’t make much sense to get too involved without more player involvement which is waning for sure, mostly due to loss of locations including mine very soon.

For some games, there just aren't many teams that are even vaguely competitive; if only 250 or so people are playing, there just aren't going to be many very good teams. Now some of that may be due to locations playing fewer than five boxes; I could see a tournament counting less than five scores per location.

I will send a note explaining why they're getting it and that there's no catch. :)

stro, i was happy to try this handicap tournament. true it may need some tweaks, but it is worth trying again. i don't prefer a playoff format myself. i would like to see a five week tournament.
bo's point on the golf handicap is good. i might try a system where you take the best 8 or 10 scores from the previous 5 or 6 months. then set a handicap based on the highest average team. so the highest team gets a zero handicap and everyone else is added a handicap to match that team. i am sure there may be other considerations with that, but every system has some issues.

Thank you for your suggestions. I will definitely learn more about golf handicapping. The next time I'm likely to do this again would be in the first half of 2025.
